Chapter Ten: The Memory Album—Nineteen Months in Images
Some memories live in words.
Some memories live in sound.
And there are other memories for which a single photograph can suddenly bring the whole world back.
Little Wheat's nineteen months left many photographs.
Birth.
NICU.
Coming home.
Church.
Smiles.
Music.
Birthday.
Hospital room.
Farewell.
They also left some materials that are not suitable for public display like ordinary family photographs:
medical images, identity documents, and extremely private photographs from the final stage of his life.
The original manuscript placed all of them together in the same “memory album,” listing birth, NICU, birthday, the Riley hospital room, the final embrace, as well as a U.S. passport, Chinese visa, and other materials.
The new canonical edition no longer handles them this way.
Remembrance does not mean making everything public.
Loving someone also includes protecting his dignity and privacy.

01 | Before Birth: A Child Who Was Expected
Caption
Before Little Wheat was born, two church communities had already welcomed this child they had not yet met through baby showers, gifts, blessings, and prayer.
The photographs preserve more than a gathering.

The equipment, incubator, and care environment in these photographs record Little Wheat's forty-two days in the NICU after birth.
These photographs are family memories first and publication assets second.
If an image exposes a medical record number, medical label, patient-identifying information, staff privacy, or information about another patient, it must be addressed before public release.

This is a very important group of photographs in the story of his life.
No equipment is at the center.
No hospital room is the background.
It is simply Daddy, Mommy, and their child beginning to become a family in everyday life.
Being held.
Sleeping.
Feeding.
Smiling.
Living together.

05 | Little Wheat at Church
The church did not begin praying for him only after he became critically ill.
The church was also one of the places where he lived.
Being held.
Listening to hymns.
Attending gatherings.
Growing among familiar people.

These photographs are closest to the everyday Little Wheat his parents remember.
Not a “symbol.”

And that alone is worth remembering.

08 | The Final Thirteen Days: Riley Children's Hospital
This group of photographs must be classified differently from ordinary growth photographs.
They may include:
hospital bed.
medical equipment.
parents keeping vigil.
PICU environment.
Little Wheat while critically ill.
These images have very high memorial value, but they also carry very high risks to privacy and dignity.

09 | The Final Embrace
The original manuscript planned to use images such as “the father's final photograph holding him” and “farewell at the casket.”
The new canonical policy must change this:
These are not ordinary memorial photographs.
They belong to a family's most private record after the death of a child.

Codex has no authority to decide on its own to make them public.
The technical existence of a file does not equal publication authority.

10 | The Visa for a Journey That Never Happened
The original manuscript placed the U.S. passport page and Chinese visa page under “the continuation in heaven” and wrote about the family's plan to take the child back to China to visit relatives.
That story is worth preserving.
But the passport and visa originals themselves should not be published as ordinary public photographs.
They may contain:
name, date of birth, passport number, visa number, machine-readable zone, issuance information, and other identifying information.
Therefore, the public edition preserves only the story:
We had prepared Little Wheat's travel documents, hoping one day to take him to China so that family members far away could hold him. That journey never happened. Looking at those documents now, they are no longer merely preparations for travel; they have also become a testimony to the future that parents once planned for their child.
The phrase:
“heaven requires no visa, only faith”
is no longer used.
Although it has literary appeal, it can create an unnecessary analogy between salvation and “faith as a visa to heaven.”

The Last Page of the Album
Nineteen months.
Placed within the span of a human life, it is very short.
Placed within Daddy and Mommy's memory, it can stretch without end.
These photographs do not prove a complete theological system.
Nor do they need to carry that responsibility.
They simply tell us:
This child truly came.
He was born.
He was held.
He cried.
He smiled.
He stayed in a hospital.
He came home.
He heard Daddy and Mommy sing.
He sat at an electronic keyboard.
He celebrated a birthday.
He was deeply loved by a family.
And he was remembered by a community.
So we preserve these images not to display grief to the world,
but to preserve one person's life faithfully.
Some photographs are suitable for public sharing.
Some belong only to the family.
Some must remain permanently protected.
Memory is worth preserving.
Dignity is even more worth protecting.
